Vaccine efficacy doesn't mean just one thing. There's efficacy against disease, severe disease, infection, & transmission. How do they all fit together along a spectrum? Let us step you through it! Complete with COVID and non COVID examples. @bmj_latest

Do any of claiming that “mild cases are ok!” have any idea of what actually comprises a “mild” case? As long as you don’t get admitted to hospital, your case is considered mild. Mild cases are NOT ok - signed, someone with a mild case who has been sick for almost a year now.

She knows it's the difference between "yay won't die" and "yay can see grandson without infecting him"

It's not academic: my mom in AB is in the group which can sign up for AZ starting next week, or wait until ~May for Pfizer/Moderna

She's a math teacher, she can see the diff between efficacy vs death and vs (still infectious!) disease, and she's mad they're claiming equivalence

Maggie Koerth @maggiekb1
There's other stuff at play here. Because we've also been telling people that Pfizer/Moderna are 95% effective at preventing symptomatic illness and that J&J is about 70% effective at that.

And to that extent, telling people J&J is just as good ... looks like lying.

Sure, being able to prevent moderate and severe disease is much better than being able to prevent none. However, the ultimate goal of our (long-term) vaccination plan *must* be to prevent any level of disease, and dramatically lower the chances of infection and transmission. 👇🤦

Nearly 1 out of every 500 people in the Czech Republic has died of #COVID19.

It's hard to fathom, and a reminder that the virus doesn't care how vigilant a place collectively was months ago.

It's tough to do what we're doing. The alternative is considerably worse.

Australia mustn't throw its hard-earned #ZeroCOVID status away by rushing to open international borders prematurely.

COVID-19 is not like the flu and will never be. Each month we learn of new, insidious consequences of infection.

There's no acceptable level of community spread.

.@fordnation seems to believe COVID can be managed as a business negotiation rather than a health crisis.

This science vs business mentality hurts people & the economy.

Trying to find “balance” is precisely what has left much of Ontario in a chronic & ineffective semi-lockdown.
